Autumn Itinerary
Autumn Inverness and Highlands tour
This one-day self-guided tour for guests of Ness Walk Hotel explores Inverness and the Scottish Highlands. The route includes around 2.5 hours of driving time and takes you out to Glen Affric, which is a spectacularly beautiful part of the Highlands, especially at autumn time.
Morning
Breakfast – Begin with a hearty breakfast at Ness Walk Hotel. This should set you up for a busy autumn day in the Highlands.
Stop 1 – Drive east of Inverness, along the A862 for around 25 minutes, heading for Reelig Glen. This ancient woodland is ideal for a relaxing autumn walk. Here you can explore the Tall Trees Trail, which includes some of Britain’s tallest trees.
Stop 2 – Next head to the neighbouring village of Beauly. It’s a great stopping point, with a some wonderful independent shops, cafes and pubs. You can’t miss Beauly Priory in the village centre, a ruined abbey church with a rich history, that’s free to explore.
Afternoon
Lunch – It’s a good idea to grab lunch in Beauly, before heading to more remote areas. Options here include Corner on the Square, The Priory and The Slaters Arms.
Stop 3 – Drive southwest along the A831 towards towards Plodda Falls. The journey from Beauly takes around 50 minutes and passes through spectacular scenery. You are now entering the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve, known as one of the most beautiful places in Scotland. During the autumn it is awash with golden colour – a spectacular sight! There are plenty of places to stop here and take in the views.
Stop 4 – There is a free car park at Plodda Falls. From here you can follow the Plodda Falls Trail on foot, which takes about 30 minutes. The walk will take you to a viewing platform right over the top of a magnificent waterfall. A stunning way to end the afternoon.
Stop 5 – Then, take the hour-long drive back to Inverness. If you go via Drumnadrochit on the way back, you’ll pass along the shores of the famous Loch Ness. Can you spot Nessie in the deep, mysterious waters?
Evening
Dinner – Back at Ness Walk Hotel, you can enjoy a relaxing fine dining experience in Torrish Restaurant. Our menu offers fresh, seasonal dishes, perfect for an autumn evening. Either before or after dinner, why not book a whisky flight experience, available until 8 pm, for a warming treat? Or simply enjoy a nightcap in the cosy bar, before sinking into your comfortable hotel bed.
