“But pleasures are like poppies spread,
You seize the flower, it’s bloom is shed;
Or, like the snow-fall in the river,
A moment white, then melts forever.”
― Robert Burns, Tam o’ Shanter
It’s not far off now. With Christmas decorations in the shops and street lights twinkling, the millennium will hit its quarter century in just weeks.
New Year brings new beginnings. If experiences rather than material things are your preference, the north of Scotland is calling.
If the Hogmanay Bells have Carpe Diem ringing in your ears, consider an exciting jaunt to the Highlands. This weekend combines Burns Night with the writing and photography skills you’ve been itching to express.
National newspaper photographer Colin McPherson and writer Jean West have crafted a workshop inspired by Scotland’s most celebrated bard. It’s designed to help you rediscover your media skills while indulging in 5-star luxury.

Experienced hosts
The experienced pair, who’ve collaborated for decades on major stories, are teaming up with Ness Walk Hotel in the heart of Inverness. Their three-night, two-day workshop offers a creative escape, drawing inspiration from Burns Night and the majestic Highlands to make your work shine.
They’re inviting budding writers and photographers to embrace their talent and produce something they can be proud of.
The workshop is tailored for those keen to try travel writing. There’s plenty to draw on, from the stunning natural landscapes to historic Inverness. The duo also welcome anyone interested in starting a blog or crafting a professional diary of their hobbies.
“We want to pass on our skills, expertise, and confidence so participants can create work they’re proud to share,” says McPherson, whose photography has been displayed in the National Galleries of Scotland.

“Past participants have loved traveling with a camera or notebook to capture their experiences. We want to give them the tools to share this—whether with friends, on a blog, or even in publication!”
Burns Weekend
Robert Burns, whose 716 known works of poetry and song still resonate worldwide, provides the perfect inspiration for this retreat.

“We wanted a vibrant occasion to inspire our participants and provide a solid theme for exploration,” adds West. “Burns Night, combined with the stunning Highland scenery and historic Inverness, is ideal for creating something special.”
Whisky tastings and authentic music in the city’s famous bars and restaurants will add to the experience.
