Make the most of winter in the Cairngorms

The Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands offer snow sports enthusiasts an incredible range of activities. From skiing to ice climbing, there are plenty of ways to get your snow fix, and all not far from Ness Walk. Whenever you go, you will be safe in the knowledge that a warm and comfortable bed awaits you back at our luxury hotel (as well as a wee dram too, of course!). Here are some of the best ways to enjoy our coldest days with Cairngorm snow sports.

Downhill skiing & snowboarding

A range of skiing is available in the Cairngorms. At Cairngorm Mountain Scotland, you can choose to enjoy some downhill skiing in The Ski Area. They have been offering snow sports for over 60 years and open in winter each year. It’s a great place for first-timers to get a taste of the sport, and experienced skiers can put their skills to the test too. There’s over 30km of pisted runs, 13 surface lifts and freestyle terrain to choose from.

This is also a fantastic venue to go snowboarding. Lessons are offered here to make even the most nervous of newcomer into a pro in no time. With gentle beginner slopes and the opportunity to hire everything you need on-site, this is a perfect place to get hooked on snow.

Ski mountaineering

If you are looking for a bit of adventure when you ski, then ski mountaineering is for you. Take in some of the stunning sights and wildlife as you travel through dramatic Highland scenery. Ski mountaineering is an increasingly popular way to explore the Scottish wilderness during winter, taking you to places that are otherwise unreachable at this time of year. It’s advisable to take a guide with you, for example from Active Outdoor Pursuits

Snowshoeing

No doubt some of us as children thought about tying tennis rackets to our feet in order to walk through the snow. Well you can now make that dream a reality (sort of) with snowshoeing in the Cairngorms. They are a bit more advanced than second hand sporting goods, with features allowing walkers to traverse ground with varying snow depth and angles. Even icy terrain can be dealt with without the need for axes or crampons. Tarmachan Mountaineering offers snowshoeing experiences in the northern Cairngorms.

Ice climbing

For the ultimate winter experience in the Cairngorms, try ice climbing. This adrenaline-fuelled activity lets you experience Scotland in its rawest form, surrounded by ice and just your wits to keep you going. Whether you are looking to dip your toe into the activity or looking for a more difficult challenge, there’s something for everyone here. Take a look at Explore Share for some guide options.

Enjoy your snowtime in Scotland

It’s always wise to check on the weather situation before you leave to enjoy Cairngorm snow sports. There are three ski centres in total in the Cairngorms, and each can help you decide if it is worth travelling that day. They are the Cairngorm Mountain, Lecht Ski Centre and Glenshee Ski Centre. Whilst snowfall is unpredictable, when it snows the mountains really come alive in the Cairngorms with people seeking fun.
